Highlights of Art Basel, Basel Switzerland

The notoriously hard selection policy and rigorous high standards has ensured Art Basel to remain the number one art fair in the world.

It is an astonishing meeting point for the international art world, with over 90’000 people visit this year.

The highly anticipated 47th edition of the Basel show was one of the most successful in Art Basel’s history, with more than 280 of the world’s leading galleries showing the work of over 4000 artists from 33 countries. A full program of artworld talk took place each day, bringing the international artworld together.

Our top 5 personal highlights of Art Basel

1. Entering the exhibition, you were struck by Oscar Tuazon’s lightweight structural wood shell ‘Zome Alloy’ on Messeplatz. The architectural structure housed a series of events throughout the week. This work of art raised the question as to all the different forms that a house can take.

2. Art Basel kicked off with the pioneering exhibition platform ‘Unlimited’ for projects that transcend the classical art-show stand through massive installations, sculptures videos, large scale installations and live performances.

3. Another highlight was the Parcours sector, engaging the public and fairgoers by placing site-specific sculptures, interventions and performances in the city’s neighborhoods, curated by Samuel Leuenberger. On the Münsterplatzt itself, in the historic centre of Basel, was the large scale Labyrinth in chain-link fencing material. It has been developed in cooperation with US prison inmates and is centered on the theme of freedom and imprisonment, movement and immovability.

4. This year’s film programme openend with an exclusive preview of Pierre Bismuth’s ‘Where is Rocky II?”. The film centers on the artists search for a rock left in the Mojave Desert in the late 1970s and shows how we project our fantasies

5. ‘ Da inventare sul posto’, a mixture of painting and performance by Jannis Kounellis was one of the highlights in the feature sector. A ballerina dances unchoreographed to the music of a violinist playing a few bars of Stravinsky’s “La Pulcinella” in front of an abstract painting. The work was being re-staged at Art Basel.
